$318B
The combined capital raised by venture capital and private equity funds globally with an active China investment mandate, across both RMB and USD vehicles, cumulative across recent fundraising cycles.
This figure aggregates fund-level capital formation, money committed by LPs into new or existing VC/PE fund vehicles with a stated China mandate, rather than deal-level deployment into individual startups. The distinction matters: a fund can close on committed capital in one year and deploy it into actual portfolio companies over the following three to five years, so fundraising totals and annual deployment totals (the figure behind our China VC Market Size stat) measure different, related things and should not be read interchangeably.
The RMB and USD components of this total have moved in sharply different directions in recent years. RMB fund formation, anchored by domestic insurers, wealthy individuals, and government guidance funds, has held up considerably better than USD fund formation, which has contracted as US institutional LPs pulled back following the August 2023 US outbound investment restrictions on China. A foreign investor reading this headline total should ask what share of it is realistically accessible capital for a non-China-based LP, since an increasing share of it is RMB-denominated and effectively closed to foreign participation.
Methodology
Aggregated from fund registration and closing announcements tracked across industry sources (Zero2IPO, Preqin, PitchBook-style reporting); figures combine multiple fund vintages and are not a single-year snapshot.
